Receive In No Small Measure

And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. Luke 24: 27.

Our eyes, ears, heart, spirit, soul, mind and strength are looking at Jesus, as He feeds those two disciples, noting how there is not one sign of evidence that He is offering anything in mean and meagre measures. Observe how the words of our Lord are not just sweet to those disciples being fed, but with ever glowing eyes, see how Jesus is bringing more and more spiritual sweet treats, if you like.

The Beginning

And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets.

Jesus begins at the beginning, a very good and wise place to start. The other day, one very dear to my heart was ill and placed in the trusted care of a physician. The physician immediately, in seeing the extremely poor condition of the patient, decided to administer intravenous hydration, as the first course of many actions. The physician began at the beginning, as he saw fit in his expert and experienced judgment of the dire situation. Jesus, in His wisdom, expertise and experience of spiritual dryness in two of His beloved children, also started at the beginning of a course of rich, ready, revitalizing sweetness.

We then, will find it comfortingly sweet to our ready ears, to accept and prove these wise words of Proverbs 16: 24. Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones. Surely, it must have been more than pleasant for the two disciples to be fed those sweet, pleasant words by Jesus.

The Bounty

He expounded to them in all the Scriptures.

The doing word, expounded, lets us into a host of ever-flowing bounty of sweetness. Remember, like the psalmist we are judging the Word, the Scriptures, to be sweet to the believers who are receiving and feeding. Jesus is not just telling His two disciples about the Scriptures, or merely talking about them. No! He is explaining in depth, with great details, meaning that He is in no way being mean and meager about what He is offering them.

The picture here is of a parent who has provided food for her young child. She dishes out the food most generously, nicely arranging it on the child’s plate. However, she has to go further. She has to cut up the food and feed the child bit by bit, taking all the time the child needs to feed and be satisfied. Can’t you see Jesus doing this for those two needy children of His? Is Jesus not your feeder also?

From the very beginning, Jesus expounds the Living Word to them. Yes, He begins at the very beginning and goes right through, maintaining His bountiful, generous giving of the Scriptures. At no time at all is He tight-fisted, limiting or rationing in what He is offering. At no time whatever, does He degrade His needy children and Himself, by extension, by calling them disgusting names such as greedy or glutton. O child of God! Your heavenly Father is more than delighted to feed you His sweet treats. Never ever be ashamed to eat God’s sweet to your fill.

Jesus has all things of God at His disposal, because He knows that the Father has given all things into His hands.  Has He not openly and publicly declared it to who were listening to Him? All things have been handed over to me by the Father. Matthew 11: 27.  Jesus is generous and lavishing in the sweet treasures He expounds to those two disciples, in all the Scriptures.

Keep fully aware and be always mindful that those two disciples on their sad journey to Emmaus, are desperately in need of spiritual revitalizing.
