Before we begin our receiving on the second special and specifically significant fact, the second large-sized portion of the text, let us be refreshed with some of the comforting, and encouraging facts already offered to each of us. These are all truths which must be accepted by faith and in faith, true and genuine God-pleasing faith.
As Jesus’ disciples, He still keeps us dear to His heart and always in His thoughts. He knows just how to provide for our every need, even when we have not yet cried out to Him. He is to be believed and trusted that He is still able to lift us out of the world, regardless of how evil the world gets. Jesus will never fail to hold us above the world.
We are to ever carry in the front of our minds and ever be conscious of this uncompromising truth, even in this moment. Whatever the reason for Jesus not being present, as we are used to Him, we have been told that we are not to become all darkened with fear and all disheartened. We must stubbornly keep our gaze on Jesus, who is on His way to us, as He will not leave us in this position indefinitely. What is the position? It is to be, Home Alone.
Now we come to our second fact, as taken from the text. And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them.
Our second specific focus - He saw a great multitude around them.
The text also lets us know that as Jesus came to His disciples, He saw something which might come across to some of us with varying minds. The question is this. What did Jesus see? All we are told is that He saw a great multitude around the nine disciples. We do not really know any details here, but we do know enough to move our hearts and minds to note facts about our Master, Jesus, which will not just encourage us, but will keep our faith and trust firmly fixed and grounded in Him.
Jesus saw a huge crowd of people. You and I know that seeing massive crowds is nothing strange or new to Jesus, as crowds followed Him wherever He went. Here are some notable examples and instances. Jesus went to heal a Centurion’s sick servant, and a crowd went along with Him. It is the same massive crowd of people to whom Jesus turns, and gives a fantastic testimony about the Centurion’s faith. When Jesus heard it, He marvelled and said to those who followed, Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! Matthew 8: 10
See Jesus, with a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. Mark 5: 21b. He is told of the death of Jairus’ daughter and as He makes His way to raise the dead young girl, a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. Mark 5: 24b. Jesus had to put His foot down here, and stop the crowd from following Him, as He took three disciples and went with Jairus to Jairus’ house.
Do you remember tax collector Zacchaeus? Jesus was just passing through Jericho and Zacchaeus sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. Luke 19: 3b
I mean, droves of people even followed Him to some remote places, where He went to be alone with His disciples. Albeit, as has been already stated, it certainly was not unusual to have that kind of huge crowd around Jesus, but it is somewhat unusual for such a large crowd to surround those nine disciples of His. But there is more to be noted about this great crowd around the nine disciples who were left, Alone At Home.
We need to continue this second focus.
