In hundreds of thousands of churches on this first day of the week, congregations of all different sizes are sitting before men and women who are preaching to them. Many of us also have had or will have, people preaching the Good News of the Gospel to us, on this first day of the week, this Lord’s Day Sunday. As there are many different kinds of churches, there are as many different kinds of preachers.
However, our minds are taken to the Preacher of preachers whose church was anywhere He was. His was church, where people received the preaching of the Word, the teaching of the Word, the healing of the Word, the freedom of the Word and more. This was natural, normal, customary and an everyday occurrence, because Jesus Himself was the Living Word of God. However, as was stated, we are specifically looking at Jesus the Preacher, although there was not ever any preaching without the other attributes of Jesus in full command and display.
I have been stirred to bring you references, one from each of the Gospel writers, concerning Jesus as a Preacher. For those who already know these references, it is always good, helpful and arousing to hear them again. For those who know them, but have forgotten them, or have become indifferent to them, receive them again as they bestir you, rousing you to quickened hearing. For all who did not know, take it as a thing of the past, for now you know, as you accept what has been offered to you. In addition, may you be so aroused, so made unquenchably curious to know more, you will go yourself to search the Scripture to listen to Jesus the Preacher.
Matthew informs us of Jesus’ entrance into public preaching. He tells us that it all commenced after Jesus’ cousin John, who was the great preacher of his time, the people’s preacher in his day, was put in prison. From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 4: 17. Jesus was a Preacher who preached after, John the preacher.
Mark gives us the exact information about Jesus as Preacher, however, he is careful to include more detail, concerning contexts and content. Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. Mark 1: 14 – 15. From Mark also, we know that Jesus went to Galilee as a Preacher, preaching nothing of His Own liking, but preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Jesus was a Preacher whose topic was on repenting and believing in the Gospel which He preached.
Luke carries us on a mission’s tour with Preacher Jesus and His disciples. Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him. Luke 8: 1. Have we not been given a taste, a glimpse of the itinerancy of Jesus’ preaching ministry? Luke is also thrilled to inform us that Jesus took His chosen team of twelve disciples, with Him.
Of the four known Gospel writers, John is the only one who does not speak openly of Jesus as a Preacher. I said openly, because in many different ways Jesus is deemed a Preacher of preachers. In the first chapter of his Gospel, when John the preacher saw Jesus coming and pointed Him out to his immediate congregation, this is what is reported. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, A man who comes after me will surpass me because he was before me. John 1: 29 – 30. NIV. Can’t you also hear, in this single phrase, will surpass me, preacher John saying that Jesus surpassed him in preaching also? Of course we can hear and see, for John preached repentance of sins and Jesus also preached repentance of sins.
Armed with this knowledge and with our personal knowledge of Jesus as Preacher, we shall spend this week on a subject which Jesus preached thousands of years ago, and which He still preaches today, to all who will hear and heed.
