Then the LORD said to Moses, Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. Exodus 17: 14
Joshua has obeyed and he and the soldiers of God’s army are on the battle field. They remain there fighting the Amalekites. They are winning the battle and gaining victory strikes over that enemy, only according to the faithfulness of Moses, to remain on his battle ground. He must hold up the staff of God in his hands continuously, for when, for whatever reason, he lowers his hands with the staff, the enemy begins to win. Human frailty is not taken into consideration, for this working partnership must continue to the end.
Moses gets tired on his feet, so Aaron and Hur help him. They bring a stone for him to sit on. These are the men Moses has taken with him. This eases his weary feet. But his hands begin to get tired, weary and numb, so that he is unable to sustain his posture. Once again, Aaron and Hur come to the rescue. They hold up Moses’ hands, one on one side and one on the other side. In that way, his hands remain steady, until the entire battle is over. Joshua overcomes the enemy.
The Lord is talking to Moses, after He has given them the victory. This is an after victory conversation. God wants Moses to document this victory. He wants it written down and kept for all to see and know. He wants this partnership to be remembered in times to come, this partnership of Moses and Joshua. God is mindful in telling Moses exactly what He plans to do in His after-battle works. Mind you, the Lord God is very much aware that He is having this victory conversation without the other side of the conquering pair being present. However, God is clear when He tells Moses to make sure that he tells Joshua everything.
Tell him everything that took place on the hill, as Moses held his staff up.
Tell him that God gave him victory on that battlefield, because the staff of God was held up.
Tell him all about how he, Moses, was helped when he became weary and tired.
Tell him that I, the Almighty Lord, have decided to blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.
God wants His people to remember His mighty works among them. He wants people to know about this Conquering Partnership, and how He has used them. God does not tell Moses to hold a feast, or a fast. He never tells him to go build an altar and make a sacrifice. He does not even tell him to go and hold a thanksgiving service. No! The first thing He tells Moses to do is to write it all down. Then the Lord said to Moses, Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered. Exodus 17: 14a NIV. God wants this story of the Conquering Partnership never to be forgotten. It is through the written word, that it will be remembered.
There is still victory in this way. The Lord delights in having His children fight the attacking enemy using, the Plan, Partnership and Procedure, as directed and given by Him. There are situations when an enemy has come up against you and the Lord says that you have to fight. Are you the Joshua? Then know that your Moses is holding up the Word of God, even while you fight. Though the battle is long and hard, know that a Moses is standing faithfully holding up high, the Sword of the Spirit, for you.
Understand then, that as long as you are fighting, the Word is being held up to God. Do not fear for your Moses! Do not become afraid, thinking that he or she is only human and will get tired after a while, because the day of fighting is so long. And when at times, you see yourself losing some strikes, with the enemy winning over you, see how quickly it is reversed. Remember! Your Moses is not alone for he has faithful companions with him. They are those who are able to ensure that the weary, tired Moses, does not fail in his work.
What a word of comfort and assurance to know that not even the frailty of the human person can halt the works of God. Are you a Moses? Then know that your Joshua, with his chosen people, are fighting on the bloody battlefield, while you are holding up the Sword of the Spirit. Understand then, that as long as you are holding up the Word, your Joshua is winning over the enemy. Do not fear for your Joshua, saying that he or she is only human and will surrender after a while, because the day of fighting is so long. Remember, your Joshua is not alone. He has other faithful fighting people with him.
And when at times you see yourself getting numb, weary and unbearably tired so that your physical energy begins to wane, remember. Remember that you have all the help you need, to keep God’s Word of promise high, till the end. Know that your Joshua is depending on you. What a strong word of faith to know that the Lord God is keeping His people who are on the battlefield. Whoever you are and whatever the battle you are facing, believe this true Word.
If you are one on the battle field, then someone is on the hill of prayer holding up God’s Word of promise, for you.
If you are one on the hill of prayer, then someone is on the battlefield below, making God’s Word of Promise, a reality.
