I begin this offering by reminding you that so far, in all that we have been saying and noting throughout the week, ever present in our consciousness, is the unarguable fact that the Word of God illuminates. The Word is our wisdom and way. We had even drawn a little likeness to us being as God’s trees, which He lights up from top to bottom, with His words of light. It is in the same vein of thought and understanding that we proceed.

Here is a most encouraging and ever enlightening word. So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.1 Samuel 3: 19.

You sometimes say of children, that your words to them have gone on deaf ears; or your words have gone in one ear and have come out through the other ear. In short, what you are saying is that your good words of advice, your tried, tested and proven words, your gems and pearls, have been of no use to them. The reality is that you can give good, right, helpful and even life-saving advice to others, but you cannot make them keep those given words. In your power and authority, you can give, but you have no power or authority to make them keep and heed your words.

We look at Samuel as a growing lad and make two observations.

Observation 1 – The Lord was with Samuel and spoke to him, His illuminating words. Samuel was as a son to the Lord, who spoke to him as a father speaks to his child. Samuel then, is receiving words of wisdom and enlightening, on a regular basis. The same may be true for many a chosen vessel of God, as He gives His words of wisdom and truth to them. However, this can be a very big stumbling block to many who do not understand these truths.

  • Receiving wise words from God doesn’t mean that you are serving and worshipping Him.

  • Receiving good words from the Lord does not guarantee that you’ll bear the Lord’s fruit.

  • Receiving infallible words from the Lord is no indication that you are free from this world’s folly.

  • Receiving true words from the Lord is an incentive, not a deterrent for the evil deceiver.

The words of the Lord given to you can fall to the ground in you.
Do not be naïve or fooled about it.

Observation 2 – The Lord did not just give His precious words to Samuel, but He Himself ensured that they did not fall to the ground in Samuel. The Lord was the Person who kept His words alive, functioning and working in Samuel. Listen again to what the Lord did. He, let none of his words fall to the ground.

Are you hearing? Do you understand? Let me liken this condition to a tree. God can give the tree all His precious, powerful growth-enhancing and inspiring, sunshine and rain, but the tree lets it all go in vain, as it does not produce the type of fruit which God desires of it. Literally, all God’s good has gone to no avail, gone to naught in that tree. The same is perfectly true with God’s Word, in many a believer. I tell you this frighteningly true fact. The Word of God can become nothingness in us.

It was God who ensured that not a single word He spoke to Samuel became useless to him or in him. This is a great big stepping stone to many who understand these truths.

Lord, where am I? Where are we? Forgive us for the arrogance and false pride we wear when we receive Your word.

Let this reality check so awaken me that I may seek You always.
Keep Your words in me, from falling to the ground.
