This is the story of a servant of God called Balaam. We know that he has the power to bless or curse people and this gift is well known. Balak, the king of Moab, knows this about Balaam and sends his human messenger to him, asking him to curse an entire nation for him. The Lord tells His servant not to put a curse on the people, because they are blessed.  Albeit, Balaam still entertains the men of Moab and the Lord is not at all pleased, as Balaam sets out on his way to Moab with those who have come for him. It is here, on this road of disobedience, that the Lord sends His heavenly angel to punish Balaam. The angel, this heavenly being is present, yet he is not seen by Balaam or any of the other men. The only one who is able to see the angel, who is travelling the path with them, is Balaam’s donkey. An angel is present, but no human eyes see him.

Here are some interesting facts.

  • It is only after the Lord opens Balaam’s eyes that he is able to see the Angel of the Lord standing in the road with his drawn sword. Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and be bowed his head and fell flat on his face. Numbers 22: 31

  • It is only after his eyes are opened to see the Angel of the Lord that he is able to hear the Angel speaking to him. And the Angel of the LORD said to him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me. Numbers 22: 32

  • It is only after he hears the Angel speaking to him that he is able to talk to the Angel of the Lord. And Balaam said to the Angel of the LORD, I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will turn back. Numbers 22: 34

Three human senses are activated by God Almighty for Balaam to have supernatural contact with this present, heavenly being. Remember, it is God, in the Angel, who activates these three senses in His servant Balaam.

Does this not pull us to the Advent Story, where the same activating of human senses takes place? O may we continue to be enlightened and brightened in the undeniable power of Almighty God, to work as He pleases with the natural, the supernatural or both. May none of us ever discredit the Supreme power, Might and Authority of Creator God, who made heavenly and earthly beings, to have them meet and communicate.

I believe that it was God and God alone who gave Virgin Mary: -

Ears to hear an angel speaking to her. And having come in, the angel said to her, Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women! Luke 1: 28.

Sight to see an angel before her. But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Luke 1: 29.

Voice to speak to an angel in her midst. Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I do not know a man? Luke 1: 34.

Angels of God, who are from heaven, are still around. They can be seen with your naked eyes, but this only happens when the Lord Himself opens your eyes and gives you supernatural sight to see these heavenly beings. Perhaps you have not been granted that grace, but others have. Never dismiss God’s authority and power, I tell you, just because it is not yet your experience.

Let the Holy Spirit illuminate this fact about angels and humans in your life, on the basis of God’s Ability, not yours.

Never block the Work of God in you, through your unfounded disbelief.
