On this Easter Monday, a day that’s given as a holiday in many parts of the world, we are rejoicing in Resurrection Light. Whether like me, your country affords you a holiday or not, we know that Jesus, the Light of the World, lives as our illuminating power. We have named this entire week, Resurrection Week and we will continue to look, listen and learn in Resurrection Light as the Spirit enables us to hear all the Resurrection Talk that will fill our Easter Week.
Like the hymn writer, P Bliss, may our lives prove this fact with unquestionable delight.
No darkness have we who in Jesus abide;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
We walk in the light when we follow our Guide!
The Light of the world is Jesus.
On this second day of Resurrection Week, we return for a moment to the Crucifixion of Jesus and how God thundered forth in unprecedented Powerful Works, Prophetic Words and Predestined Will.
When Jesus was crucified, when the Light of the world was crucified, both Matthew and Mark, inform us that darkness came upon the place. From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? – which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Matthew 27: 45 – 46.
Mark puts it like this. At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? – which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Mark 15: 33 – 34.
Both Gospel writers, witness to this fact, and thought it fit to document this darkness. Remember, Jesus had publicly declared, in the hearing of all, that He was the Light of the World. On one occasion, after giving sight to a grown man, who was born blind, Jesus spoke many things about Himself to His disciples. One of the profound words He spoke was this. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. John 9: 5. On this other occasion, Jesus is speaking publicly to all people, the crowds that have gathered. I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8: 12b. Now, that Light of the World is hanging on a cursed cross, for the sins of all who despise Him, ridicule Him, mock Him, scorn Him and disbelieve Him. He has taken all the sins of all who have sinned against God.
As we listen to what Mathew and Mark tell us of this period of darkness, although much is not detailed, they give us enough to see the:-
Heart of our Superior Creator God, in His Powerful Works.
Mind of our Supreme Creator God, in His Prophetic Words.
Will of our Sovereign Creator God, in His Predestined Will.
We have been told that for three hours, from the sixth to the ninth hour, while Jesus, Son of Man and Light of the world was dying, God sent darkness, not just over Golgotha or Jerusalem, where Jesus was dying, but throughout the land. Faith allows us, in light of our faith’s seeing, to hear God speaking in thunderous voice, through His created darkness.
In our given text, whether taken from Matthew or Mark, three most vividly bold facts are illuminated for us. These have been brought to my blinded eyes in the same way the blind man, who was given sight, spoke in resurrected joy. If perhaps, you are as I am, then you too will be excitedly promulgating personal, resurrection facts in your talk. Whether or not, like the now seeing man, the man totally removed from his blindness, we are harassed and bombarded by the sceptics, we cannot but testify to obvious facts. We testify to living truth, actual reality, in these most victorious words of resurrection light. One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. John 9: 25b KJV. Is this your testimony on this second day of Resurrection?
Holy Spirit remove from us the darkness of ignorance and indulgence that we may all show to the gaping world, we are no longer blind, because of Resurrection Light. Let our talk be all Resurrection Talk. Amen!
Tomorrow we look to the promised three most vividly bold facts, as illuminated for us.
