Pentecostal Promise

As promised, today we are only dealing with the promise of God to His resurrected people, as prophesied by His prophet Joel.

We need to understand clearly that God’s promise came to a people who had returned to Him, their One and True God; a people whom their God had heard and answered; a people to whom He sent a bountiful harvest, new wine, grain, oil and much more. God will restore and resurrect them from their barrenness.

You will eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; And my people will never be put to shame. Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the LORD your God and there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame. Joel 2: 26 – 27. NKJV

Be very clear and note this often missed fact. It was afterwards that God had Joel prophesy about the Pentecostal Promise, which was fulfilled on the Feast of Firstfruits, or the Feast of Pentecost.

The Pentecostal Promise is brought to us under three areas, as noted in Joel 2: 28 - 32

There is the Promise of: The pouring out of God’s Spirit.

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Then God identifies who all people refer to and what fruit of the Spirit will be borne by them, or manifested by them.

Prophesying - Given to your sons and daughters.

Dreams – Given to your old men. As we know the word men refers to men and women. Old men and women will dream dreams.

Visions - Given to your young men. Again, it is with the understanding that young men and women will see visions.

Then God goes on with His generous pouring out, to include in His meaning of all people, servants as well.

Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

There is the Promise of: The showing of wonders of God’s Spirit.

I will show wonders

God stipulates where these wonders will be shown and what these wonders will be.

Wonders on the earth – Blood and fire and billows of smoke.

Wonders in the heavens – The sun will be turned to darkness. The moon will be turned to blood.

This is to take place, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

There is the Promise of: Salvation for all who call on the Name of God, who is Spirit.

I will save people

Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved. The Lord specifies, the people who will be saved and identifies the places from which salvation will come.

People – Those who call on the Lord. Anyone and everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord. Those whom the Lord calls. Among the survivors even, whom the Lord calls.

Place – Mount Zion and Jerusalem.

Deliverance will come from these places.

Perhaps you are curious as I am, to know more about why Mount Zion and why Jerusalem? Are they one and the same place? I believe that Mount Zion is high ground found in Jerusalem. Some of us may be well acquainted with the wonderful hymn, Glorious things of Thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God. We believe therefore that Mount Zion is God’s City. Hebrews 12: 22a, confirms this. But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God.

When we listen to Psalm 48, a psalm of the Sons of Korah, this is their song. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Psalm 48: 1 - 2.

In Revelation 14: 1, we listen to some of the vision of John. And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written on their foreheads.

I suspect, like me, reading this verse reminds us of, the idea and understanding of, vision, a promise of Pentecost. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Joel 2: 28

Additionally, it reminds us that it is through the Name of the Sacrificial Lamb, Jesus, we are saved, those who call on Him and those who are called by Him.

We continue tomorrow, with the filling.
