Yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. Luke 18: 5.
We now pay greater and more joyous attention to the bountiful treasures of learning, which we are receiving from this week’s text. We are receiving the voice of the powerful, the wise and the dominant one. Open your eyes wide and look! Nothing of what we are hearing in our ears, comes from the voice of the poor, the weak and docile one. Marvel of marvels! Wonder of wonders! Are we seeing and hearing correctly? Are we hearing Jesus clearly and distinctly? Are we misunderstanding and missing what He is saying?
Jesus has shown us truth in this parable, about the Wisdom and Working of God. Let’s reason together as faith allows us to be led.
Here is poverty over power. The one of worldly power is troubled by the one who is poor. This widow troubles me. What! A judge is not troubled by people, those on his own level, his rivals, but he is troubled by a poor widow. He is not perturbed by the common folk who constantly flock to him, but he is troubled by a powerless widow. He is not restless and uneasy in mind about the dissenters in his jurisdiction, but he is not at rest with a docile, widow-woman, with no support whatsoever.
We pause awhile to lift high the unsearchable wisdom and working of God.
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! Romans 11: 33.
Here is weakness over wisdom. The one of earthly and lawful wisdom, qualified to the hilt, avenges or vindicates the widow. Don’t miss the whole understanding of this phrase. I will avenge her. Indeed, one role of the judge is to vindicate people as he deems fit, right and proper. This means that not every case is judged, merited and discharged promptly, in favour of the plaintiff. But this judge, without even paying much attention to the case, if at all he pays any attention, gives complete, total and pleasing satisfaction to the widow, with alacrity, because she keeps coming to him. What! A judge’s hand is moved by a weakling? He is not moved by those who complain about his delays and suchlike, but the relentless, quiet and peaceful manner of the widow, coming to him, propels him to decisive action.
Let’s linger awhile, to uplift the ineffable wisdom and working of God.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. James 3: 17
Here is docility over dominance. The one who dominates, who has rule and jurisdiction over all, who can command left, right and centre as he desires, is intimidated by a humble, widow woman, who has absolutely no human power or financial backing to her name. Lest by her continual coming she weary me. Note, the other people with whom the judge is dealing, no other persons or groups, and perhaps no other widows also, have brought this judge to such mind and action, as this gentle, harmless woman. What! A judge is wary of being wearied by one of meekness, of compliance, of pure peace? She does not become more and more belligerent as she goes to him, nor does she show any kind of hostility in mouth or manner. Yet, the one who holds dominion, bows to the one who is under dominion.
Let’s halt awhile, to adore, revere and hold high the unfathomable, supreme wisdom and working of God.
My son, eat honey because it is good, and the honeycomb which is sweet to your taste; so shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul; if you have found it, there is a prospect, and your hope will not be cut off. Proverbs 24: 13 – 14.
Many statements can be made here about the wisdom and working of Almighty God. None of us is without hushed, yet inbounded praise, merit, glory and loud honour to our One Wise, True and Holy God. We are ever strengthened and encouraged, not just because of what we see in a widow, but what we know can be in us too.
