I had asked you if you weren’t flooded with Jesus, not David, when you read the overview, purview, preview and review of Psalm 37. I was excitedly curious to know if you also were sharing these wonderful pangs of pleasure and delight, just to have life-glimpses of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in this psalm. Now, having invited you to come with me, as we spend time on Jesus and Jesus alone in this psalm, we hasten on.
Indeed, with anxiously beating hearts of anticipation, we give all our minds and hearts; energies and wills; time and interests to God the Holy Spirit, as He gives perfect light and life, to all He brings before us of Jesus, who is our Truth, Life and Way. He is the same Jesus who is our PAL, the Preeminent, the Alpha, the Leader, He whose Name never changes, whose Position never changes and whose Role never changes, as our Redeemer and Saviour.
We are being taken down the same path as was taken for David, taking the same, overview, purview, preview and review. However, we are given a view, before we follow on.
View
Jesus, Son of Man. Once, in responding to a scribe who had said he would follow Jesus, Jesus openly referred to Himself as the Son of Man. Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. Matthew 8: 20b
Jesus, Immanuel, God with us. We see clearly that in Jesus lies the full attributes of the Trinity. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Colossians 2: 9
Jesus, who left heaven and came to earth. Jesus Himself speaks of coming into this dark world and about leaving it again. I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father. John 16: 28.
Jesus, Lord and King of all the earth. This image and description of Jesus is most stunning and glorious. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19: 16
Jesus who is our Brother. Jesus proudly announces that all who do the will of God are His family. For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother. Mark 3: 35.
It is in light of these and loads more that we can view Jesus in this Psalm 37. By faith, we receive and believe, trusting the infallible leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit, who only knows truth, for He is Truth.
Now, with the ears, eyes, minds and responses of faith, we receive this as Jesus speaking to each one of us.
Overview
Can you hear Jesus addressing His people, His own people, among whom He lives? Jesus lived among us in flesh and now He is still with us in Spirit. God has made Jesus, King of all kings and Lord of all lords. Jesus is not now speaking to anyone, but His own. Yes, He came for others, but He came for His own as well. Do you recall what the angel of God told Joseph about the Baby, the virgin to whom he was betrothed, was carrying? She shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1: 21 Yes, Jesus came to His own, the Jewish people, the chosen of God, but His own did not all take kindly to Him.
Understand therefore, without argument or disdain, Jesus, like David, is not speaking to anyone outside of His Jewish people. He’s not speaking to the world - pagans, non-believers, non-worshippers of the One True God - people who don’t know that Christ has liberated them from Satan’s evil snare. Jesus is not now discoursing with the outside enemy, the world, as it were, but He is speaking solemnly, truthfully and advisedly to the Church. Who is the Church? The Church is the Body of believers, those whom God has chosen particularly, to serve Him specially. But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light. 1 Peter 2: 9.
We must see Jesus as having a serious and solemn talk with His own people, about the deadly wages to the wicked and glorious gifts to the righteous. His, address is vivid and exceedingly clear, with absolutely no room for misunderstanding and misinterpreting.
Are we not His now people, His Church?
