Jesus Our King

Here is the question brought over from yesterday’s offering. Who is our King? This may seem like a very strange question to ask, or to even formulate in one’s mind. For others it may seem like an unnecessary waste of time, asking such a question, since we who are believers, know that Jesus is King.

My mind is taken straight to the Gospels and the first image, the first picture which flashes before me is the inscription ordered by Pilate to be fixed over the cross on which Jesus was crucified. It was all written in clear, large, block letters, with the same kind of instruction and understanding given to Habakkuk by God. He was instructed by God to write the vision plainly, so that even the person running, can read its message correctly, to tell it to others. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. Habakkuk 2: 2.

The words on the top of Jesus’ cross could be seen, and read by all passing by, runners included. It read thus: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. John 19: 19b. This title on Jesus’ Cross, was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, so that anyone passing could read and understand what it proclaimed about Jesus as King. Isn’t this truly amazing? Whether one believed that Jesus was King of the Jews or not, did not in any way hinder that person from being able to see and read truth.

Have you ever stopped to give deep consideration to these facts? The Title, written above the Head of Jesus, as He lay dead on the cross, was not just written in gigantic, block letters for all to read, even from a distance, but Pilate ensured that people from different parts, foreigners included, would be able to understand.

It’s like what is observed at some international airports, where instructions for the smooth running of such a highly active place are written in English, Spanish and French, as most people speak at least one of those languages. All the people passing by the place outside the city gates of Jerusalem, would be able to read and understand what the sign said.

I draw your attention to Jesus’ own testimony. Bound as a prisoner, high ranking officials of the Sanhedrin deliver Jesus to Pilate. Pilate comes straight out and asks Jesus a direct question. He wants to hear Jesus speak, and not go on the grounds or testimonies of others, what others are saying about Jesus being King of the Jews. Then Pilate asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He answered and said to him, It is as you say. Mark 15: 2. There we have it. Jesus has admitted that He is King of the Jews.

Where is this leading us? Where are we going?

Tomorrow, we shall be further enlightened.
