Hold Fast To Faith

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. Hebrews 4: 14
Up front, you are told to hold on to your professed faith, because you have every reason to be sure, stubborn and strong in your actions. Why are you so stubborn and unshakable in your faith? Why are you not letting the ways of others, move you or even shake you in the least bit? Why do you continue to stand on the faith you claim? This is made a reality because of One who is in heaven right now, your High Priest, Jesus Christ, Son of God. But who is your High Priest? Why can you be so stubborn in faith in Him?
Let’s have a moment of personal communion with our High Priest, as by faith you hear and confess, Jesus as your ever present ever praying High Priest because: -
He is able to sympathize with your weaknesses. Lord is this really true? Do I truly believe this to be so? Are You really aware of my weaknesses, all of them? And do You sympathize with me, when You see my pathetic, helpless state? Why do You help me? How are You able to not just help me, but do so lovingly and understandingly? Why are You sympathizing with me? Jesus, Son of God, High Priest, who are You? Holy Spirit, keep me firm in faith.
He has been tempted in every way as you have. Lord, is this really true? Maybe some temptations Lord, but certainly not in the ways I have been tempted. Have You really seen how the tempter has targeted me? Did he ever target You in the same way? Why have You given Yourself to be tempted as I? Why suffer the fighting and beating of temptations Lord? Jesus, Son of God, High Priest, who are You? Holy Spirit, hold me fast in faith.
He was without sin. Lord if this is really true, if You truly experienced the weaknesses and temptations of the flesh as I, then what am I hearing? Who am I seeing as my High Priest? You are looking at a High priest who is able to pray for you, standing in your shoes, so that You can stand in His. Your High Priest never yielded to the temptations of the tempter, but He wore every single piece of human flesh that the tempter could try to deceive. Your High Priest never sinned. It is because He is without sin that He is at the throne of all grace, praying for you, bringing you before God’s mercy seat and keeping you there. But Lord, is this not where we part company, because I have sinned and You never have? How can You really sympathize with me, one who has been tempted and yielded to the temptations? Jesus, Son of God, High Priest, who are You? Holy Spirit, stand me strong in faith.
Let’s reason this together. The role of the tempter is to tempt human beings to sin, because humans are flesh and flesh alone can be tempted by sin. In other words, the tempter cannot attack Spirit, only flesh. So Jesus had to have taken on true flesh, when He came incarnate. His was not some kind of a different synthetic or fake flesh. How do you know? The evidence comes from the evil deceiver for He tempted Jesus, not once, not twice, but all through His life in the flesh. Think of this. Look at you and Jesus. Do you believe that His temptations were different from yours in quality and quantity?
Let’s continue to reason. The deceiver is able to tempt flesh and not Spirit, since God’s Spirit cannot be tempted. His work is to tempt you to sin against God and others. He is being faithful and true to his name as tempter. Aren’t you a perfect testimony of this truth? Okay! If there is a tempter, then there is a Saviour. The Saviour is able to save you from yielding to temptations. His work is to save you from sin against God and others. He is being faithful and true to His Name as Saviour. Are you a perfect testimony of this truth?
Holy Spirit has put before us in clear open light, our High Priest, who has gone through the heavens. It is because of who He is that we can approach the throne of grace with firm and stubborn faith. It is this faith in our Saviour and High Priest, to which we must ever hold fast.
