God's Mercy

On this first Lord’s Day Sunday, in the penultimate month of a year that is going down, like a majestic sunset, we are grateful. We are grateful and truly thankful for this privilege to be able to see, not just this first Lord’s Day Sunday, but the first day of a new week.

We give all glory, might and power to our Supreme and Superior Lord, who has brought us to this moment in time. He is our Creator and He is also our heavenly Father, the Person who has kept us alive, so that we can see this precious moment, called today. It is by His mercies and nothing of ourselves that this privilege of today has been afforded us.

God is merciful and we listen to Jesus, God’s beloved Son, acknowledge this fact about Father God. Jesus has been teaching His disciples, schooling them on several practical, everyday practices, which they must follow, if they are to be His true disciples and heirs of the Kingdom of God. Among the many things Jesus instructs, is this. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Luke 6: 36. Jesus has clearly stated these facts about Father God. The Scriptures have specifically indicated that these teachings, were directed to Jesus’ disciples, no one else.  Luke 6: 20 says this. Looking at his disciples, he said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. It was during this time of teaching that Jesus told them about Father God.

Jesus has told them, and all of us, His disciples, that we ought to be merciful. The given reason for us to be merciful is because God, our heavenly Father, is merciful. God is merciful and Jesus has told us so. As God’s children therefore, we too must show mercy to others. Shall we refuse to show mercy to another, when daily, our heavenly Father’s mercies never fail to reach us? Shall we ever think to withhold mercy from some other, when new, every morning we receive our Father’s mercies? We are to be merciful, as we, undeserving souls, receive mercy.

In Ephesians 2: 4 – 5, we are reminded of God’s mercy and absolutely stunning love for us. This is indescribable love to us, even while we were dead in our sins and separated from our Father in heaven. His love was working for us. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. Is not God rich in mercy towards us?

Even Titus keeps before us that we were saved by our Lord’s mercy. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. Titus 3: 4 – 5a. Shall we not bow before our merciful God, in adoration and reverence?

We are now turned to Jesus as our High Priest. He who is able to sympathize with our weaknesses is able to make perfect intercession for us, because He was tempted in every way as we are. We are called therefore, to hold firmly to the faith we have in Him. We are not to waver in our faith and trust, so that, in all humility, believing in our Lord, Saviour and High Priest, we, with boldness, can approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4: 16b. The mercy of God is to be received.

Throughout this week, we shall be focused on God’s mercy.

May the mercy of God reign forever. Amen!
