The God Of Peace Be With You

As we begin a brand new week, let me remind you that for the past weeks, we had been looking at praying and the prayer of faith. One of the sure guarantees of prayer, is the pure calm and peace which come from such prayers as addressed to Sovereign, Father God.

Peace is a huge word and can be a most elusive word. Many people, believers and non-believers alike, are craving peace of heart and mind, spending huge sums of money and investing precious, valuable time, in trying to find peace. Alas! With all these valiant and focused efforts, too many remain void of such lasting peace. Why is this the case? It is so because true, lasting peace is only found in God – Father, Son and Holy Ghost – who Himself is Peace.

In a melodious and joyful song of praise, this is what Isaiah raises about Sovereign God. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26: 3 NKJV

Jesus had been teaching and telling His disciples many things, reassuring them that even though He was leaving them in the flesh, they would not be without Him. This is one of the most wonderful and powerfully reassuring words which He has given to them. John 16: 33 NKJV. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

During this week, we will be exploring different experiences, when peace is at the forefront. Let’s now listen to the Apostle Paul and what he offers to the believers in Philippi, in Philippians 4: 9. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

In this exhortation, Paul is assuring the Philippians that the God of Peace will be with them as He is with Paul, if they are willing to put some things into practice.  Note, first of all, that there is an immediate solution here. It is to have the God of Peace with you now, not in some future time, for He is available NOW. To have the God of Peace with you is to have peace with you. It is like claiming to have the owner of the thriving restaurant with you, yet you walk in hunger. No! To have the God of Peace with you, is to have the One who IS Peace, with you.

Paul knows this and he is bold to assure his people that they too can know the God of Peace with them, if they put these into practice.

  • Whatever they have learned from him. In other words, whatever Paul has taught them and they have learned – they must put into practice.

  • Whatever they have received from him. They are to use all that he has given to them, all that they have accepted from him – they must put into practice.

  • Whatever they have heard from him. Paul has always been talking, teaching, preaching to them and all that they have heard from him – they must put into practice.

  • Whatever they have seen in him. They hear Paul speak, but they also see how he lives and operates. Whatever they have seen in his life – they must put into practice.

For this to happen, they would have had to be a people very close to Paul. They are the people who have learnt from him, received from him, heard and seen him.  He is not speaking to strangers, but to those who know him and have already received from him. In other words, they are to use what they already know and have. They are to put into practice what is there, lying unused.  It is as some person who longs for more quiet time and leisure time, but spends his hours labouring with a cutlass to cut the lawn, while a perfectly good lawn mower lies unused in the shed. Are you getting the picture here? To have more time for resting and leisure, to be able to see and admire more of the beauty around, put the lawn mower into practice.

To know the God of Peace with you, to be able to walk with peace, put faith and trust into practice and put all that you have received from Jesus into practice.

The works of faith are never the works of fear.

Lord, You’ve been my Example, Teacher, Friend and more. I ask that You will help me to put into practice all I have learnt, received, heard and seen from You. Amen!
