Faith By Hearing

On this final Lord’s Sunday in a week that plummets us straight down, with head-spinning speed, into a brand new month, I hold before you faith. It is only with unwavering faith in Almighty, Father God, that we can face all that is before us, and not be made a worry-pot of steaming, boiling fears about the unknown tomorrow. It is only by unadulterated faith in God that we can truly be free to enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Without faith, how can we bless the Holy Name of God? Without faith, how can we ever hope to please God? Without faith, how can we love God?

On this privileged first day of a new and mixed week, where the old and the new will meet, where the setting of a month and the dawning of another will take place, as Creator God wills, our focus is on faith. We shall follow through with this focus on faith, on each day of the week.

We begin by stating facts about faith which hold God as our Heavenly Father, faithful to all His children, in giving faith to each of us. Paul makes this clear to the Roman Church, when he calls each believer, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Romans 12: 3b. Indeed, a measure of faith has been given to each of us as God has reckoned and determined. It is the amount that is just right and suited to each believer. It is perfect faith, full faith, ready faith that has been given to each of us to be worked out to God’s good pleasure.

However, what I now bring you about faith is most vital also. For all who already know this truth, this is but a gentle reminder. For those who know, but have forgotten, or live as though it does not exist anymore, either morally or spiritually, this is a jolt of a reminder. For those who have never known, your not knowing has now been removed, as truth is brought before you, bringing you right before God with pleasing alacrity. What is this truth? It is what the Scripture tells us in Romans 10: 17. So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

On one occasion, when Paul was almost mortified at seeing how many believers in the Church at Galatia, were being seduced and strongly encouraged by erroneous teachings, he asked them this one question. This only I want to learn from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3: 2.  The hearing of faith is still for us all today, for faith does not change in its manner or matter. The hearing of faith, fires and fuels faith, so that our faith grows and swells to the distinct honour and glory of God.

Faith is like an ember that is there glowing, but only when you fan it, or blow on it, will it ignite and become an active living flame. Faith is in you and me and all who believe, for God has put faith in us as we all now know. Nevertheless, hearing comes as the fanning or the blowing, which awakens, excites, and ignites the ember of faith into a full blown fire, setting it to works beyond human understanding and thought. Faith is then given supernatural wings by Holy Spirit, and O how Father God is well pleased.

As I have already indicated, each day of the week will bring us hearing, so that our faith, in whatever state it may be, will know a fanning, a blowing upon, so effective that our strengthened, increased and flaming faith, will produce  works which please and satisfy our Father in Heaven, and many on earth.

Have faith in God, His Word be hearing,
And you will know faith that is daring,
Daring God’s Word to believe, not doubt,
That is what true faith is all about,
It’s trusting the Lord without reserve,
It’s faith that your hearing will preserve,
Then you will not work or speak amiss,
Yes, God will be pleased, even in this.
Amen!
