Many of us, when we hear of the faith of the centurion, immediately think of the centurion who wanted Jesus to heal his servant. We think of how thrilled Jesus was with that man’s faith, a faith He did not find in Israel. In today’s faith meditation, we are shown similar faith in another centurion, a man whom many of us never look at as having such great faith. Let’s look at this faith with fresh eyes and may we have those eyes turned in on our faith in God, as we hear all that is being said to each of us, individually and collectively.

Our one-sentence text is Acts 10: 27. While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.

It is necessary for us to go back to the beginning of what transpired. Cornelius, a centurion in the Italian Regiment, was a devout follower of God, who prayed regularly and gave generously to those in need. He and his family were God-fearing. One day, Cornelius had a vision. In a supernatural encounter with an angel of God, Cornelius is told to send men to Joppa to find a man named Simon who is called Peter.

Let’s be honest here. You have a dream or vision that tells you to go and look for a man, you don’t know. You have not even heard his name before, yet, not by a human person, mind you, but by a heavenly being, you are told this, and you believe. Cornelius believed what he was told in a dream. Would you have believed this word?   His is the faith that believed the word heard in a vision.

Note, this faith does not just believe. Cornelius responds. He literally calls his servants and sends them all the way to Joppa to find this man called Simon. He gives them the instructions he was given by an angel and sends them on their journey.  Think of it. You have a vision, okay. But to tell it to others and ask them to go make it an actual happening, must take super faith. Would you, on a dream send friends, servants, or family to carry it out?  His is the faith that believed and told others.

This faith believes and tells others, but it goes further. While those two servants went on their way, Cornelius prepares his house for this sent for man, called Simon. Are you seeing? Are you really seeing and hearing this man, called Cornelius? Is he for real? He is doing all this on a vision? Cornelius ensures that he is ready and his house is ready for the stranger, told to him by God’s angel.  Would you have done any big preparations on a dream or vision? Or would you have waited for some more concrete proof? Not Cornelius! His is the faith that believed and prepared big time, for the coming of one he did not know.

Now what do you say to this one? This one really gets me. Cornelius is not being cautious at all, if you ask me. He is extremely sure of what he is told in his vision. He is so sure, so without any doubt, that he invites family and friends, not just a few, but a large gathering of them, to come to his house to meet this man whom he was told about by the supernatural being.  Do you really think Cornelius has time to think about what others might say about him? Do you think he cares whether people see him as a bit unstable in his head? He has them there waiting for his servants to bring Simon to his house. His is the faith that dared to include others.

Are you still hearing? Do you know such faith? Do you think it’s possible for you to know such faith?

Faith blows impossible, wide asunder,
Can the world’s noise hush the rolling thunder?
Will human limitations stay faith’s hand?
When God takes your faith, it’s His to command.
Amen!
