The couple before us is not really a stranger, since many, if not most of us have heard the names of Aquila and Priscilla in the New Testament. By way of introduction, I have quoted a couple of relevant verses of Scripture from letters which the Apostle Paul has written to believers in two different countries.

We know that Aquila and Priscilla are a married couple who love and serve the Lord. What we know about them comes from glowing and sincere testimonies, as given by Paul, one of the great and wonderful apostles of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

In writing to the church in Rome, Paul sends greetings to friends, family and co-workers. This is what Paul says about the couple.

Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Romans 16: 3 – 4.

We have evidence and testimony from Apostle Paul that Priscilla and Aquila, were not just a model couple, a dedicated, sincere and faithfully serving couple with Paul, in the privileged and wonderful work of the Lord, but they were more. They were a couple who had given their entire lives to Jesus, without fear or reserve. They were a couple who served without boundary or limit as it were, for they were always willing to face any challenges, with faith and trust in their Lord. In his greeting, Paul has been pleased to publish that this mighty couple have risked their lives for him. Additionally, they have also served all the churches of the Gentiles, with the same zeal, passion, sincerity and honesty. These churches are all grateful to them.

In Paul’s first letter to the Church in Corinth, he includes greetings from other churches and people. He specifically mentions Aquila and Priscilla, and the loving greetings they have sent to the believers at Corinth. The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house. 1 Corinthians 16: 19. We have been well informed by Paul that this couple even gave up their home to be used as a church, a meeting place, where believers could gather to worship. We have been given a picture of this couple who are not just ordinary disciple-followers, but servants who have hazarded their lives for Paul and the churches.

Tomorrow, we shall be introduced to a work of this couple, to which we need to pay special attention, to give more aggressive determination and to which much greater, loving attention, must be given.
