Here is our working text as each of these servants of Jesus indites.
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour, darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? – which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Matthew 27: 45 – 46.
At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? – which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Mark 15: 33 – 34.
Faith, and faith alone, allows us to hear and receive these three most vividly bold facts, illuminated to us about the three hours of darkness.
1. Our Superior God’s Powerful Works.
God showed His Superior Works in bringing darkness to a place during daylight hours. In the order of things, this is not the time for darkness. These are daylight hours, from six o’clock to nine o’clock in the morning. In fact, if we count time as the Jews did in Jesus’ day, the sixth hour would be midday, or high noon, as we say. On that day when people were being crucified, the light of day was present as on any other day, but God’s Son was dying. God showed that He, His Father, was not just aware of His Son’s Blood being shed, but He showed His invisible, authoritative Presence and let His inaudible, commandeering voice ring through, as very much large and in charge. God, Creator of day and night, created the darkness.
We must never lose sight of the fact that God spoke light into existence, in a world of darkness. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness he called night. And there was evening and there was morning – the first day. Genesis 1: 4 – 5. Now, as His Son is dying on a cross of sin’s darkness, Creator God comes into the light of day and as only He can do, and in His Almighty, indomitable Power, creates darkness. Almighty, Superior, Father God is present, Performing Miraculous Works, showing His unswerving, Superior Power, even over nature.
2. Our Supreme God’s Prophetic Words.
God chose to have this darkness last three hours. In other words, God not only created, or made this darkness to take place, but He controlled the time the darkness should last. God’s Voice of Supreme Authority spoke time and it had to be so. Do you see? Do you realize? God has shown, in unchallengeable, and undeniable power and authority, His Supreme Power to bring darkness and remove darkness. Look! As if to give a preview of His Will and Way for His Son, Jesus shows His Mighty Power in the, Three. Three hours is all the time God allots to the darkness of day to have its show as He shows His Lordship. Three hours and three hours alone, are the hours God has commanded and this time limit must be obeyed. No darkness can, or ever will overrule the Prophetic words of God. Is there not Resurrection Talk in this?
Three days are all God will give to the darkness of death to have its show in His Son. Three days and three days alone, are the days God has commanded and this time limit must be obeyed. No death can, or ever will overrule the Prophetic words of God. I say prophetic for this was prophesied by God’s prophets, as Jesus Himself told His disciples. This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. Luke 24: 46b - 47
Now, as His Son is suffering on a cross of sin’s darkness, Creator God comes and speaks into the whole situation.
Almighty Supreme, Father God is present, Prophesying Miraculous Words - Three Day only for the darkness of death to hold dominion. Is there not Resurrection Talk in this?
3. Our Sovereign God’s Predestined Will.
God did not confine the three hours of darkness to just the place of the Skull, Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified. In His unfathomable and unsurpassed wisdom, God spread the darkness over the entire land, so that people near and far will know the Sovereign Authority and Supreme Power of God’s Will, in the death of His Son. The three hours of darkness was over all the land. The picture presented is of the Will of Father God, in not confining this darkness to a single spot. He spread out the darkness over Jerusalem and all the surrounding arears. This is His Sovereign Will. Does not faith teach us that if God can spread darkness to places far and wide, He will also spread His Marvellous Miraculous Light, to places or people far and wide also?
In these three hours of darkness, Almighty, Sovereign, Father God is present, Proclaiming His Miraculous Predestined Will. Is this not what Paul tells us? In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1: 11 – 14
Almighty, Sovereign, Father God, is present, Performing Miraculous Works, showing His unstoppable, Sovereign Power, even in the passage of time. Is there not Resurrection Talk in this?
Hallelujah! On this celebrated Third Day of Resurrection Week, we can rejoice. We shall continue to celebrate the fact that the Light of the Word is alive. We shall continue, by faith to listen to Resurrection Talk and be transformed in heart, and mind.
