Without wasting a second, we get started as we receive this verse, as recorded in Mark 10: 3. What did Moses command you? He replied.

Jesus had just asked this question to some Pharisees who had come to where He was, to test Him. Their whole mission was one of testing Jesus, in the same way the devil comes to test us in order to bring about our failure, fault or falseness in Jesus. Here is the truth and nothing but the truth.

  • Pharisees then and Pharisees now are guided solely by the law and the law only. Jesus then and Jesus now is guided by love and love only.

  • The wisdom of the Pharisees then, as is the wisdom of the Pharisees now, comes only from their interpretation of the law and the works of the law. The wisdom of Jesus then and the wisdom of Jesus now, comes only from His interpretation of love and the works of love, which is Grace.

  • The unalterable reality is that any mind, any person who operates on the basis of what is lawful and what is not, according to the works of law, will always be opposed to Jesus. Likewise, Jesus will always be opposed to all Pharisaical thinking and living.

Note clearly that what is now being shown as emanating from this meeting together, of Pharisees and Jesus, is typical, and thus indicative of what is always the case of such meetings.

The Pharisee breathes, sleeps and eats law as master, teacher, judge and jury. Law is life, to them, and anyone, regardless of who that person is, who deviates from one jot or tittle of following that law to the letter, as is interpreted by them, is considered false, fake and a fraud. Never ever accommodate, or make compromises on this truth, for Law and Love do not and cannot agree because Law demands human works and Love demands Jesus’ works, works of grace.

With this wisdom and knowledge fitted in your heart and mind, note that this learning begins with Jesus asking some Pharisees a question. In other words, Love is asking Law a question. We are curious to know what exactly occasioned Love to ask Law a question on Law? The very simple and short text carries the perfect answer. The two words, “He replied”, tell us that Jesus is answering something that was told to Him by the Pharisees. Love is responding to Law’s questioning. This sends us to look above the text, where we receive valid, confirming information. We are going there as we are receiving convincing proof about who Jesus is to us – a Living and not a dead Master and Lord – whose wisdom is neither powerless, nor impotent in our day and age.
