On this final day of a week that words are inadequate to describe; a time of keeping us ever so alive, quickened and dutifully conscious and aware of what our LORD expects and wants from us as His lamps, we come. We come with renewed hope in what we are to be doing and being. We come free of all the hindrances to our God-given mission. We come fully engulfed and embraced by God the Holy Spirit, who is never unable to keep us being efficient, effective and saving lamps for many a sailor who is tempest tossed. Before we are led into the final Salvation Saver Truth, will you listen again to the entire four-line stanza from which we have received much and are still receiving more.

Trim your feeble lamp my brother,
Some poor sailor tempest tossed,
Trying now to make the harbour,
In the darkness may be lost.

Here is our fifth Salvation Saver truth. In the darkness may be lost.

When we see these words, darkness and lost, our minds and hearts would sink, because we are seeing two giant, destructive words. These are words which speak of total disaster and destruction. Why is this so? It is so because the tempest tossed sailor is not in the time of day when it is daylight, but this is all taking place in the night hours, when it is pure darkness. One has the picture of perfect, pitch-black night, when there is no shining moonlight over the sea and no stars lighting up the skies even. That alone, screams of hopelessness. That in itself is a state and stage of lost-ness. However, this is how the understanding is offered to us. We bask and celebrate two impenetrable and unconquerable facts. Light conquers all kinds of darkness.

The first is this; Jesus is the Light of this dark world. It’s a world dark in sin and sickness; dark in evil and idolatry; dark in pride and self-righteousness; dark in unbelief and ignorance; dark in self-piety and self-pity; dark in arrogance and deceit. Darkness is all around, but Jesus has come. Light has come, as we are reliably informed in John 8: 12. When Jesus spoke again to the people, this is what he said. I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. As Salvation Savers, we do have the Light, Jesus Christ, in us, so that we never have to walk in any darkness of this world. And here is what we rejoice most about. When He makes us His earthly lights, that light is not hidden in us. It means that whenever one in darkness needs Jesus’ Salvation Light, we are able to shine in and through their darkness, to the honour and glory of the Father.

The second is that it is impossible for someone, anyone to receive Jesus, the Light of the World and be lost in the darkness of this world’s tempests. As we are told time and time again; evil will surely assail, but God will most surely prevail. Just as impossible as it is for darkness to conquer light, or evil to conquer good, or the devil to defeat Jesus, so too this is also impossible. It is impossible for one to be lost in any darkness, as long as Salvation Lights have reached them. I remind you of two infallible, salvation truths which Jesus spoke. In John 6: 39, we hear Jesus speak these words. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up in the last day. Again, we hear Jesus say, in John 18: 9b. I have not lost one of those you gave me.

O yes my brothers and sisters, with Jesus, none can be lost. This assures us that as His Salvation Saver lights, our non-feeble lamps, which have been trimmed, are being used to help save some poor sailor who is tempest tossed. By faith in God’s infallible Word of truth, we know that our shedding of light in the darkness, will reach the one in need and another life will be saved from being lost.
