Promise In Prayer

Having learnt more about the Power and Purpose of Prayer to which each believer has been called, we now look to the Promise which Jesus gives to them.

Remember, we are looking at the time when Jesus sent out the Twelve, after He endowed every single one of them with His Power and Authority over every kind of injurious and unclean spirit. After giving them His Authority, He gives them specific instructions on what they are to take, what they are to wear and what their reactions to people’s responses must be. Still with curious awesomeness and an even deeper hunger to learn more about how we are to respond in prayer, we move on to the third truth or fact.

This is the third thing which Jesus gives to the Twelve. He gives them Promise. When we read the text, Wear sandals but not an extra tunic, Mark 6: 9. NIV, no matter how our eyes scan the verse, we see not one promise. Nevertheless, when our eyes are taken by the Holy Ghost and given His focus and when our minds are made to think as He thinks, wisdom simply illuminates our path.

Jesus has given instruction to His Spiritually empowered helpers, whom He is sending on mission, that none of them is to be double-layered. Not one of them, regardless of who he is, is to wear two coats. That Jesus has told them to wear sandals, but not to wear an extra tunic or shirt means that Jesus is prepared to take care of them, against the elements. Don’t forget, He has already taken care of their Spiritual needs, so that regardless of what evil spirits they meet, they have their Master’s unconquerable Authority and Power in them.

But this instruction, to be a single-layered servant on mission, means that their Master has already taken care of their bodies also. In short, Jesus is saying to them, I will take care of you. I will provide for you. I will be your buttress and shield in all weather. The Lord always rewards faith, big time.

There is the promise that they will not fail, due to human weakness or frailty. There is the promise that all will be well, because Jesus is their protector. There is the promise that no matter how unfavourable the weather may turn, Jesus has already sorted them out. Suddenly, it hit me like a slap in the face. This is their Master, Jesus, who speaks to the weather, raging, boisterous, furiously frightening and life-threatening weather, and it obeys. I SAY NO MORE!

Oh! How delighted Jesus must be with their faith, faith that allows them to go with one tunic, depending on His Words of promise.

This same Jesus has called you to serve Him in prayer and He has given you His promise in prayer, for He is the One who says, If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given to you. John 15: 7. You have the Promise of Prayer embedded and working in you.

Pray then in your single-layered state.
