The Produce of God, in the prayer of faith
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. James 5: 15
We are holding the meaning of the word produce, as what comes from a certain source, or what is extracted from it. For example, the farmer plants and harvests his bountiful crop of sugarcane and is able to extract rich, fresh syrup or cane-juice from it. However, when the farmer places his or her canes in the hands of another, with greater facilities – power and skill – sugar is produced. On their own, farmers can make and sell cane syrup or juice, but they are unable to get more out of their sugarcanes, no matter how hard they try. They need the power and authority of that which is more than they are, to produce sugar from the sugarcane.
The prayer of faith is something akin to this, in that prayer carries produce which the Church, you and I, are only able to evidence and share with others, when our faith is in the Unmatched Name of Jesus. When we are abiding in Him and He is abiding in us, then it will be impossible not to evidence His produce of faith. Please remember that faith comes from God. However, too many of us treat faith as some farmers treat their sugarcanes. We are complacently contented and satisfied to simply extracting just the ‘syrup’ of faith, and forfeit the ‘sugar’ of faith. James has already reminded the Church, the Twelve Tribes scattered all over the world, of the produce of the prayer of faith, for the sick.
There is not just, Power, in the very prayer of faith itself, as this prayer starts packed and laden with God’s given power; Provision which our Lord has already made for the prayer of faith, in relation to many and various needs; Promise attached to the prayer of faith, the Lord's unretractable and unchangeable words oath-bounded to faith, but there is Produce. The Produce of God, in the prayer of faith, is unnumbered. However, specifically related to our given Bible text, these are what the prayer of faith for the sick, will result in, or produce, in the Blessed Name of Jesus.
Salvation – The prayer of faith will save the sick person.
Resurrection – The Lord will raise that person up.
Forgiveness – If that person has committed sins, they will be forgiven.
All along, you will have noticed that the prayer of faith was being offered for the sick. In the preceding verse to our text, James spoke directly to those who were sick. He gave them the way they were to take in their sickness. Let’s listen to his advice. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5: 14. I had wondered about this advice because James is treating all elders in the same way. But when the Spirit of the Lord enlightens, O how there is no more wondering and misgivings. He makes it clear, as He leads you into all truth. James is not simply being Scriptural here, but he is exercising his deep, unwavering faith in the Power, Provision, Promise and Produce, given by our Lord to His Church, in the prayer of faith. James knows that wherever the Twelve Tribes have been scattered, regardless of the situation of His Church, no gates of hell will prevail against it. James knows that Jesus has given authority to the Church, to do many things. He was present when Jesus commissioned His disciples. He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark 16: 15. James is addressing the Church that is scattered all over the world. In Jesus’ commissioning of the Church in her walk and ways, before He ascended, back into heaven, this was among His last words. They will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well. Mark 16: 18b.
The Church carries our fathers’ faith, faith given to do the works of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to all the sick, in body, mind and spirit.
