Jesus Says To Knock

3 min read

And I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. Luke 11: 9.

Having come to the third and final action of prayer as clearly and simply laid out in the text, we can’t but roll out unstoppable thanks to our Lord. It has dawned brilliantly upon me, this treasure for which perhaps most or many of you have given thanks. I have just been shown our Master and Lord in most unselfish light, in this way.

Prayer is of God and Jesus knows prayer, lives prayer and receives all the benefits of prayer. He knows undoubtable benefits of prayer and is willing not just to teach what He knows and lives, but to teach it in the fullness of His Presence, His Power and His Promise. In other words, Jesus has held back absolutely nothing on prayer or about prayer from us. In Him and with Him, we have the absolute fullness of prayer. O how thanks falls upon us like rainbows in a rain-drenched sky.

Thank You Jesus, Risen and Ascended Lord that You are with us in full, Spirit form. Thank You for prayer, and teaching us to pray. Amen!

Here is the final action as found in the text.

And I say to you, knock and it will be opened to you.

In like manner, as with the action of seeking, we looked at Jesus Himself for understanding and example, we do the same with knocking. In this setting, Jesus is knocking at the door of His Church, which is neither hot nor cold. He has come to quicken life in such a Church, to heal and forgive. He wants them to be zealous and repent, so this is what He does. Herein is the image of Jesus as the Knocker. Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Revelation 3: 20.

Jesus is knocking at the door of not just any place, but the door of a Church, a place that belongs to Him. Inside are His people who are in need of help, healing and forgiveness. Note how Jesus goes to them and knocks at the door.

There is urgency, for He stands and knocks waiting in hope that someone will hear His knocks. He knocks with mission, so that He can enter and have divine fellowship with them. Our knocking in prayer must be one of urgency, a life-saving mission. Our knocking ought to also be with hope, knowing that someone will eventually open and let you in. Only Jesus can lead us in this as He is the only, One true Knocker.

In the other example, Jesus is teaching and preparing His followers to be ready for the Coming of the Son of Man, who will come without announcement, at the most unexpected time. He advises them to be girded, with their lamps burning and He goes on to say this. And you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. Luke 12: 36. Is not Jesus showing Himself as the One knocking? In this case, His knocking is not to linger and wait, but it is to those who are waiting on His knock and are quick to respond and open the door to Him.

This is Jesus, with all the attributes of God, the Most High, speaking to you, me and all disciples who have asked to be taught to pray. Learner, learning to pray, never gainsay what Jesus has said. He is the One who says that in prayer, knocking will result in it being opened to you. Jesus never ever said that knocking will not always bring an open door. Most grievous! We become all downcast and depressed in prayer because we knock and knock but receive only closed doors. We are encouraged by well-meaning believers, to console ourselves with tradition’s words. They are words such as these. If God wanted you to have it, you would. Honestly, will Jesus, He who is the embodiment of Truth, wilfully or un-wilfully, speak such blatant lies to His students? Anathema!

Lord, I hear, as hearing You give,
Please have mercy and me forgive,
Ere I would face a brand new day,
Teach me my Master, how to pray,
Bathe me in Your commands in prayer,
Refresh me, ere I rise from here.
Amen!
