Jesus Says To Seek

Having been made to clearly see that Jesus, our trusted, honourable and faithful Master, has spoken to us with His full, Sovereign Authority when He said, And I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you, we continue. We are solemnly, and thankfully ready and waiting to receive and meditate upon the second action of prayer. And I say to you, seek, and you will find.

Jesus says to seek.

In obedience to Jesus’ command to all of us, His disciples, whom He is teaching to pray and leading in prayer, we are to seek. When Jesus tells us to ask, there is also seeking. What is this seeking in prayer like? We will take its meaning from Jesus Himself. We go to Jesus, as He uses that same action word in speaking to His hearers.

Jesus has been preaching and teaching on different areas of life which are affecting the free living of His followers, here on earth. We too are His followers, His disciples and we are the ones He is addressing. We are burdened by the cares and trials of this world. To different degrees, we worry consistently about things such as clothes, food, money and more. What is Jesus’ ordered way for us? Let’s listen.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6: 33 – 34.

Is not one of the main things Jesus is telling us, is that we are not to spend our time in constant concern about earthy, carnal things? Is He not saying that instead, we are to be more conscious about our Spiritual lives?  Are we not to be more focused, more determined, and more resolute about the things of God, before the things of man? To seek then, is to consciously give energetic zeal to know more of and have more of what is before you. Seek in prayer and seek prayer.

We listen again to Jesus about Himself and the work which He came to earth to do. Check again the well-known story of the wee, little man who climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus. At the end of their meeting, He and Zacchaeus, this is what Jesus states. Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19: 9b – 10. Jesus can tell us about seeking in prayer for He was and still is the Example of Seeker, being the Principal Seeker. How did Jesus seek Zacchaeus? One sure way was when He freely cast His eyes away from the following crowds, moved His mind from the mission before Him, and dared to stop, look up, see and call Zacchaeus to Him. Seeking calls for self-denial and self-discipline.

Remember this is Jesus, Immanuel, speaking to all of us who have denied ourselves and have promised to follow Him as He leads. We are the ones, the believers in Jesus, whom He is teaching to pray. Jesus never said that when we seek, we will find sometimes or most times, for that matter. He never said that in seeking, the intensity or severity of our seeking will determine the outcome. Most sadly and frighteningly so too, this is tantamount to what prayer has become and is becoming, in some very subtle ways. These many different beliefs about prayer, which Jesus never spoke to us, are so pervasive, they have become like traditions, accepted facts which we live and teach.

Will our Lord and Teacher be a deceiver to His disciples? Will He command us to ask, seek and knock, and when we obey Him, He gives us excuse upon excuse, why His promises are not available? God Forbid!

New words and ways take positions,
They’re becoming new traditions,
My words on prayer become less true,
As you look to another view,
Prayer becomes not what I command,
Only what traditions demand.
