As we begin our meditation together, may we ever be conscious that we are receiving from a week completely whole, like the whole under-garment which Jesus wore. Faith allows us to take each word given to us, each meditation, as His under-garment. We say this and believe it, because Jesus is His Living Word with which He has personally clothed all who are born of the Spirit. We read in Isaiah 61: 10a. I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness. His righteousness is seamless.
For the remainder of this entire and seamless week, we will be focusing intently on the Right Hand of God in the life of Joseph, son of Jacob. This meditation is being based on a Twentieth Century hymn, called, ‘The Right Hand of God’, written by Patrick Prescod. The hymn specifically speaks of God’s Right Hand doing things in our land. For our meditation, we are taking the word, land, to signify and mean, our Church family or our Church people, believers and servants of God. Understand then that the word, land, is you, as an individual and for you as the body or community of believers.
What do we mean when we speak of, the Right Hand of God? However you understand His Right Hand to be for you, I will like us all to come to a common mind on the meaning, which we will hold close to us, as we receive this undergirding Word. As children of Father God and believers in His Word, we know that God’s Right Hand does not only speak of His Almighty, Supreme Power and Unrivaled Authority. In these meditations, we are believing and broadcasting that the works of God’s Right Hand are works that are Right and Fitting works. Notice carefully that His works are not only, Right, but they are Fitting, meaning, ‘Just Right’ for each of us.
It’s like the children’s story about, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Most of us fondly remember that in the fairytale, Goldilocks tasted three separate bowls of porridge but only one was, Just Right; she enjoyed it and ate all, nothing remaining. She tested three separate beds also but only one was, Just Right for her; she basked in its comfort and fell peacefully and soundly asleep. We know the full details of the story, however, our interest is in the fact that Goldilocks tested all that was before her, before she was able to get what was Just Right for her. We too have tested them all, tried them all, all the tantalizingly enticing foods, comforts and other pleasures of the world, but only in God, through Jesus Christ, have we found what is, Just Right. It is the Word which we wear daily, placed upon us by our Father, through His Holy Spirit.
It is with this understanding of Right that we come to the contemporary hymn, The Right Hand of God, where the writer has brought God’s Right Hand to us, doing six specific acts or works. Only by the enabling of the Holy Spirit, only through His revelations and teachings, are we able to taste, see, hear and internalize what is Right, Just Right and perfectly fitting for you and me, in this seamless week.
The hymn has six stanzas, each naming or highlighting a work of God’s Right Hand. As promised, as we focus intently on the Right Hand of God in the life of Joseph, you will see the Divine works of the Spirit who has revealed to us those six acts or six works written in the hymn.
Our specific text is Genesis 45: 4 – 9 NKJV. You may like to read.
Tomorrow I shall bring it to you first.
